York is one of the most charming cities in the UK, a town in size but a city in status thanks to its famous Minster (in Britain having a cathedral makes you a city even if you’re tiny). Two hours from London by train, York is both a destination in its own right and a great starting point for an adventure around some of the most spectacular scenery this little island has to offer — the Yorkshire moors are on your doorstep, while the Lake District, Peak District, and Scotland’s insanely beautiful west coast are all reasonable next stops. While English food isn’t notoriously worth travelling for, York has a vibrant independent restaurant scene, endless craft breweries, and some really good Asian food thanks to its sizeable immigrant community. You can easily spend three days amusing yourself in the city and its surrounds.
