San Sebastian is foodie shorthand for gluttony. Tucked away on the edge of the Atlantic near Spain’s border with France, pedestrian paradise San Sebastian has a stunning culinary reputation, and can boast more Michelin stars than actual people (not quite, but it does have the world’s second-highest concentration per kilometre). Just over 60 sq kms in size (23.5 square miles), San Sebastian is as famous for its cheap and cheerful pintxos as its €300/head tasting menus. While the latter no doubt deserve their accolades, I’m operating on the assumption that, like me, your travel budget is more squarely aimed at the lower end of the market, with room for occasional treats. To that end, come with me to the Basque Country as we feast and walk until our feet and bellies are both fit to explode!
