Modena is, in my not so humble opinion, about as perfect as an Italian city gets. It’s a dream to get to by train from almost anywhere you can think of in Italy, the historic centre is small enough to cover on foot but big enough that you can explore endlessly, the Duomo is my favourite church in all of Italy (the “stained glass” windows are astounding, and that’s all I’m going to say so I don’t spoil them for you), and with one notable exception it is a truly brilliant place to eat and drink. Even better, it’s largely off the tourist trail (over-priced and ignorable Ferrari museum excluded) — I’ve been in every season, and have never been whelmed by crowds.
