Mérida is hardly an undiscovered gem, but it isn’t heaving with tourists either. It is a charming city on the Yucatan peninsula, and boasts both a beautiful historic centre and a thriving food scene. Sitting between the coast and a massive ecological reserve, Mérida can be a standalone long weekend, or part of a longer trip exploring one of Mexico’s two most celebrated states for regional cuisine. Inside the city itself it’s easy to get around on foot, with most of the points of interest found in or near the compact centre. Be prepared for high temperatures and higher humidity (an afternoon siesta is almost essential), but also be ready for those temperatures to break with heavy downpours. Think Singaporean climate, but in Mexico.
