Florence has to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Whatever the season, with its backdrop of rolling Tuscan hills, its tolling church bells, and its buildings coloured in ochre, in orpiment, Firenze glows with the light that inspired the Renaissance. To me it is a magic city, a romantic city, full of the charm and warmth I find lacking in Paris. It’s manageable on foot, the food is simple but stunning, and the surrounding countryside is easily accessible if the madness of urban life overwhelms.
