Auckland may be a long (long, long!) way away, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Locals might moan about the pace of infrastructure development lagging behind population growth in recent years, but for a visitor it’s a small city, not densely populated, and fairly easy to manage on foot. With a lot of green space, a vibrant developed harbourfront, and islands to explore only a short ferry hop away, Auckland has a lot to offer the casual visitor, even one without time to venture too far afield. The city and its environs offer spectacular nature, Maori culture, and vineyards galore, while there are more exciting places to eat and drink than there are hours in the day. This 72-hour guide is but a starting point.
